Two of the surgeons I worked with today!
It was my first day at the hospital here in Panama; and I
got to spend it in the operating room! It was an awesome filled day!
Previously, I have only been working in the health clinics and schools. When I arrived in the surgery department of
the hospital, I was whisked away by a surgery resident and a nurse, who gave me
a pair of scrubs to change in to, booties for my feet, and a surgical cap. I can’t even begin to explain the excitement
of my experience! Upon entering the operating room wing, I was given a surgical
mask, which is the only downfall of being in the OR, in my opinion. I must say,
I’m not a huge fan of constantly breathing in my own hot air for hours on end! I
was able to observe three surgeries during my visit today. The most exciting surgery I observed was a Cholecystectomy,
also known as a gallbladder removal. The surgeon did it laparoscopically, so
the patient was only left with four small incisions on her abdomen. The entire procedure was done with a camera
lens, so I was able to see the insides of the abdomen, liver, and gallbladder
right on the screen in front of me! I was very surprised at all of the
technology found at the hospital. The OR
resembled one from home, almost exactly, which I never had expected. The hospital isn’t very big because it is
considered to be located in the countryside of Chitré, and it was only built about one year
ago. The Social Security program of
Panama funds the hospital, so any working citizen, along with all members of
their household, can seek healthcare at this facility.
The entire staff at the hospital was super friendly, and one
of the residents I shadowed throughout the day even spoke some English! I think
this is the first English conversation I have had with a professional, while
staying here in Chitré!
I will be spending the next two days at the hospital traveling
through the Intensive Care Unit, and also the Emergency Room. I’m eager to see what the different
departments have to offer. Here’s to many new experiences, and overloading my
brain with tons of new knowledge! :)
This is the hospital entrance!
XOXO, Jenny
