Laundry day! I decided to attempt to wash some of my clothes
today…I quickly learned that the washer sure is something out of the ordinary,
and there is no such thing as a dryer in Panama! Since the wash cycle on the
washing machine is only 15 minutes long, I expected to get my clothes done
pretty quickly, unfortunately, it was an all day event! In order to wash my
clothes, I first had to fill up the machine with the hose, add my soap, and
then select the cycle. When the clothes
were finished washing, I then had to drain the washing machine and rinse the
clothes by hand because they were still very soapy! After rinsing the clothes,
I transferred them to a spinner, which is next to the washer. The spinner only holds about four articles of
clothing at a time, so it basically took me the entire afternoon! And since
there is no dryer, I hung each and every one of my clothes to dry on the
clothesline! Oh how I miss the luxuries of having my own washer and dryer, and
I still have to do this for three more weeks, ha!
Enough on my lengthy laundry method, and on to my second day
at the clinic! Once again, today I was at Centro de Salud de Monagrillo. Instead of being in the pediatric department,
I was in the Obstetrics department today.
It was a lot of fun! Most of my time was spent doing pre-natal visits! I
took fetal heart tones, weighed the mamas and took their blood pressure. They
also spoke with the doctor during their visit.
One thing I find unusual during appointments is when the patient is
called into the room they first give information to the nurse, and they get
their blood pressure and weight. Then
the patients return to the waiting room until all patients have had their
initial visit with the nurse, then they are called back into the room, in
order, to meet with the doctor, gather belly measurements and listen to fetal
heart tones! Basically, if you have a medical appointment here in Panama, plan
on making it an all day event!
We now have a broadband stick for Internet access to use in
our house, so hopefully I will have better luck trying to connect to the Internet
from now on! The stick only works in one computer at a time though, so we share
it between six girls.
Hasta Luego!
XOXO, Jenny
